Jon Martin grew up with deep roots in the Civil Rights movement and New York’s bohemian counterculture. Working at Twilo, he established lifelong friendships with notable nightlife figures including Godfather of House Frankie Knuckles, who introduced him to a cadre of legendary nightlife figures including Nicky Siano, Tedd Patterson and Eric Kupper, and taught him the basics of mixing, controlling a system and working a dancefloor. Knuckles was also a tremendous musical influence, schooling Jon inside the DJ booth of his Sound Factory Bar residency, as well as in the recording studio.

As Digital Content Director at King Street Sounds, Jon produced a number of underground house events in NYC, and contributed to the success of artists and projects including Ananda Project, Dennis Ferrer, Steal Vybe and Underground Artists United for Life. In the early 2000’s Jon worked closely with the legendary Dave Mancuso to produce quarterly Loft events in New York City.

Jon created the sub:culture brand to funnel all of these disparate energies into one direction, and has made numerous appearances on terrestrial, internet and satellite radio both in the United States and internationally. Today, he continues on his mission to deliver “the medicine in the music” with his sub:culture events, as a co-owner of KID Recordings, with his weekly mixshow sub:culture selections on InDaMixWorldwide, and as a staff contributor to Starvue Loft in Bushwick.

Liza Jessie Peterson is a renowned actress, poet, playwright, educator and activist who has been steadfast in her commitment to incarcerated populations both professionally and artistically, but specifically with adolescent boys and girls detained at Rikers Island for eighteen years. She has worked as a program counselor for the Department of Corrections, a reentry specialist, a teaching artist (with poetry and theater), GED instructor for the Board of Education at Rikers Island, and a life skills workshop facilitator. She was recently featured in Ava DuVernay’s documentary The 13th (Netflicks) and was a consultant on Bill Moyers documentary RIKERS (PBS). She has written several plays, including, The Peculiar Patriot, where she performed excerpts of it in over 35 penitentiaries across the country and opened for Angela Davis at Columbia University’s conference on mass incarceration.

Also known for her exceptional poetic skills, Liza began her poetry career at the Nuyorican Poets Café and was a vital member of the enclave of notable poets who were part of the “underground slam poetry” movement. It was this electric group of artists that inspired Russell Simmons to bring “spoken word” to HBO where Liza appeared on two episodes of
Def Poetry.

As an actress Liza appeared in several feature films: Love the Hard Way (costarring with Pam Grier and Adrien Brody), Spike Lee’s, Bamboozled, K. Shalini’s, A Drop of Life, and Jamie Catto’s, What About Me. Liza’s first book, ALL DAY; A Year of Love and Survival Teaching Incarcerated Kids at Rikers Island, out now.

Dub-inspired music from Deep Space Media:
www.wavemusic.com/wave-label/9

Deep Space
Deep Space, is an adventure into future dub, spacey vibes, and abstract grooves featuring resident DJ François K. live on the mixing board with special guests.

Since the party’s launch in 2003, Deep Space has featured a who’s who of well known and then emerging artists from around the world representing a stunning array of musical styles that Deep Space is known for integrating into its open minded aesthetic. While the mission of Deep Space remains committed to sharing a love of dub, a vast, under-appreciated musical direction, the party has invited a great range of guest artists to share their creative dub mixing approaches to all things spacey, psychedelic and mind-bending.

From dubstep pioneers such as Mala, Kode9 and Digital Mystikz, to house, techno & disco icons such as Giorgio Moroder, DJ Harvey, Dimitri from Paris, Theo Parrish, Rhythm & Sound, Ron Trent, Carl Craig, Scuba, Joe Claussell, Derrick May, to cutting edge producers and tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Jamie xx, Mary Anne Hobbs, Mr. Scruff, DJ Spooky and dub legends such as Adrian Sherwood with Pinch, Mad Professor, Mutabaruka and U-Roy, and Brazilian icons Otto with Carlinhos Brown and plenty of live musical and dance performers, Deep Space continues to be a magnet for attracting many of electronic dance music’s most innovative artists. Almost all of the guest artists who play at Deep Space create truly one-of-kind, crate-digging "Deep Space sets."

Deep Space has been presented abroad at the Big Chill Festival (UK), Plastic People (UK), TDK Cross Central Festival (UK), Space Lab Yellow (Japan), Café Jamaica (Japan), Precious Hall (Japan), Phase (Japan), throughout France, in Berlin, Denmark, SONAR Festival in Barcelona and across the U.S. In 2010 Deep Space received a dedicated night at Burning Man’s Disorient camp. In 2004 Deep Space was nominated for “Best Club Night” by the internationally televised “DanceStar USA” awards. In 2005 & 2006 François K. won “Best Resident DJ Award” at the Club World Awards held in Miami. Deep Space was named “Best Party 2004” in Time Out New York. Deep Space was nominated for “Best Party,” at the Club World Awards 2006 and 2007. New York Magazine featured Deep Space in the “Best of New York 2006” issue. In 2013 Do Androids Dance lauded Deep Space as one of “The 10 Best Club Nights in the US.” Francois K. was named "Best Resident DJ" by the 2015 Nightclub Awards. Also in 2015 Time Out New York listed Deep Space as "one of the top 20 parties in NYC right now." In 2005 Deep Space NYC Vol. 1, a compilation mixed by François K., was released on Wave Music’s imprint Deep Space Media to critical acclaim.

François K.
François K. is the creator and resident dj of Deep Space. He has won countless awards for "Best Resident Dj" for his exceptional sets at our weekly party. He is also revered as the co-creator of New York City’s legendary dance party Body&SOUL. He tours worldwide for not only his soulful house dj sets, but also for his techno and dub mixes. Over the years he performed regularly at Studio 54, Paradise Garage, The Loft, Ministry of Sound, Sound Factory Bar, Twilo, Roxy and Club Yellow in Japan, to name a few. In great demand, François has gone into the studio to produce/remix recordings by Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, Jimmy Cliff, Underworld, Eurythmics, Bunny Wailer, U2, Ashford & Simpson with Maya Angelou, the Smiths, Dido, Finley Quaye, Diana Ross, Cure, Mick Jagger, Fishbone, Talvin Singh, D Train, Erasure, Yazoo, Black Uhuru, Thomas Dolby, and Jah Wobble. Our move to Output

While we have absolutely cherished our time at Cielo, and love the club’s incredible team and stellar sound system, we also feel there is a tremendous creative community in Brooklyn who embrace Deep Space’s sense of adventure. Output’s phenomenal Funkion One Sound System will give our maestro, Dj Francois K., the opportunity to take us on bigger music journeys; the type that have continually won him “best resident dj” awards during Deep Space’s 14 year history. We are so grateful to the entire club community for everyone’s loyalty, positive vibes, and good hearted support over the years. You have all been the most remarkable dancers, artists and team players, and we hope you will ever consider yourselves who you truly are: our family.
